Your Body is Speaking Before You Do

communication Sep 16, 2026

Before you say a word, people are already forming an impression of you.

In person, they notice your posture, facial expression, eye contact, energy, and even the way you enter the room.

On camera, they watch where you look, how you’re framed, and whether your presence comes through the lens.

Your body speaks before you do.

My question is, “What is it saying?”

Here are five things to pay attention to:

1. Remember your presence arrives first. Before you say anything, people notice how you enter the room, how you greet them, and whether you appear engaged. Rise, smile, introduce yourself clearly, and show people you respect the moment.

2. Keep your posture open. Sit upright, lean in slightly, and keep your hands visible. Don’t slouch, lean back, and cross your arms. That makes others view you as tired or detached.

3. Make your listening face match the conversation. Your face communicates when someone else is speaking. Show them empathy when they share a problem, enthusiasm when they share a success, and attention when they’re explaining something important.

4. Make your gestures and eye contact work for you. Natural gestures reinforce conviction and help people follow you. Look at people when you’re speaking and listening, but don’t turn eye contact into a staring contest. The goal is connection, not intimidation.

5. Translate your presence through the camera. On video, what feels natural in person can look flat or disconnected. Frame your head, shoulders, upper torso, and hands. Look through the lens, bump up your energy a bit, and use good lighting and a clean background so people can see and feel your presence.

You don’t need to become a performer.

You need to make sure your presence reflects the truth of what you mean.

Your body never lies, so train it to tell the story you want.
