5 Ways to Keep People's Attention

communication Aug 14, 2026

One of the biggest communication mistakes professionals make has nothing to do with the quality of their ideas.

It's assuming good ideas automatically keep people's attention.

They don't.

People stay engaged because of how you communicate.

So, today, I’m dedicating my blog post to 5 simple ways to keep people with you.

I hope you’ll stay with me. Ha ha.

1. Give your message structure. People follow signals they can predict. Chaos makes them change the channel. Make it easy for people to follow where you're going. Use a framework. Tell them where you're headed before you take them there.

2. Open with purpose. Attention is most expensive at the start. If you don’t buy it quickly, you’ll never own it. Give them what I call a Signal Sentence that immediately tells them what they're about to hear and why it matters.

3. Watch your voice and cadence. People don’t just hear your words. They hear the music behind them. Keep an eye (eh, ear) on your projection and pacing. And, use pauses to let important ideas sink in.

4. Match your body language to your message. Long before you speak, your body tells the audience whether to trust or tune out. Tend to your posture and presence. Confidence isn't just heard. It's seen.

5. Make it about them. Presence earns attention. Connection keeps it. The more your audience sees themselves in your message, the longer they'll stay engaged.

If you'd like to develop these skills in depth, this Friday inside the Leadership Coaching Program I'm teaching Speak So People Stay: Verbal Delivery, Cadence, and Presence.

It's one of the most practical communication sessions I've ever taught, and you'll leave with techniques you can use immediately in meetings, presentations, interviews, and everyday conversations.
